The Teaching Section of Grffins Swimming Club meets at Arnos Pool, Bowes Road, New Southgate and offers lessons on Monday, Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday mornings for children from the age of 4 years (a small amount of places are allocated to 3 year olds). There is also a class for Adults on Wednesday evenings.
Each lesson is half an hour in length with an ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) qualified Teacher/Assistant Teacher at each level. The whole programme is overseen by Linda Bayliss, herself a qualified Teacher and Coach.
Swimming lessons for children are progressive in line with the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) Awards scheme. Swimmers from non-swimmer (beginners) to advanced swimmers take part in this varied Award scheme and as the swimmers progress into the early stages of competitive swimming speed awards are added to the syllabus.
Emphasis is on the teaching of water skills, development of strokes (frontcrawl, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly), confidence and safety. Although these are swimming lessons there is also an element of fun which assists the development of the swimmers.
The first five groups of the Teaching Section are taught over the width of Arnos Pool, from which the swimmers can progress on to swimming lengths. There are four length sessions of half an hour offered for the more advanced swimmers on Monday and Friday 5.30 pm – 6.00 pm, Thursday 6.30 pm – 7.00 pm and Saturday 10.00 am – 10.30 am. By the time the swimmers reach this standard, the progression would be to swim 2 or 3 times a week. All four half hour sessions are therefore offered to each swimmer and they choose which sessions they wish to attend.
From the half hour lengths the swimmers then progress on to the Pre-Competitive Section of the Teaching Section where they would swim for an hour each session. The times for these sessions are Monday 6.00 pm – 7.00 pm, Thursday 7.00 pm – 8.00 pm and Saturday 9.00 am – 10.00 am. All three sessions are offered to the swimmers and are at Arnos Pool.
